The first two of these are marked by the word <em><strong>desire <\/strong><\/em>(\u03b5\u03c0\u03b9\u03b8\u03c5\u03bc\u03b9\u03b1), which refers to a strong impulse or desire\u00a0 (Freberg).\u00a0\u00a0 The word is not inherently negative as it is used here, it is neutral.\u00a0 It can just as equally refer to a desire to do good as it does in Heb 6:11, <\/span><strong><em>But we want <\/em>(<span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">\u03b5\u03c0\u03b9\u03b8\u03c5\u03bc\u03bf\u03c5\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd<\/span>)<em>each of you to continue to be diligent to the very end, in order to give full assurance to your hope.<\/em><\/strong><em> <\/em><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">&#8211;<\/span> <span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong><em>for fleshly gratification<\/em><\/strong><em> <\/em><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">The first clause is literally:\u00a0 The desire of the flesh<em>. <\/em>It can refer to sexual desire, but could be anything the flesh desires.\u00a0\u00a0 The Jewish sense of this concept was for desires that focused on the self. \u00a0\u00a0It is putting yourself and your wants first.<em> <\/em><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">As a side note:\u00a0 This is one of the reasons works cannot earn Salvation. \u00a0Working to earn salvation is grounded in a desire for self, i.e., to earn salvation. You are working to earn benefits for yourself.\u00a0 Such works cannot please God. Works that are pleasing to God come from Love, love of God and Love of others, whereas working to earn salvation is grounded in love of self. <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">&#8211;<\/span> <span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong><em>for possessions<\/em><em> <\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">The second clause is literally: of the eye.<em> <\/em>It refers to a desire caused by what one sees and is ultimately desire for things:\u00a0 See it \u2013 Want it. The problem is that it puts things ahead of people.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <em> <\/em><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">&#8211;<\/span> <span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong><em>worldly arrogance <\/em><\/strong><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><em> <\/em>(\u03b7 \u03b1\u03bb\u03b1\u03b6\u03bf\u03bd\u03b5\u03b9\u03b1 \u03c4\u03bf\u03c5 \u03b2\u03b9\u03bf\u03c5)<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">The third clause is literally:\u00a0 false pride of life<em>. <\/em>It refers to a false pride (\u03b1\u03bb\u03b1\u03b6\u03bf\u03bd\u03b5\u03b9\u03b1) or arrogance that is unfounded, taking a false or exaggerated sense of pride. \u00a0This is not, for example, taking pride in your work.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Here the pride refers to a false pride of life, or the things of life<em>.<\/em> It is a pride that forgets that everything we have comes from God.\u00a0 (1 Cor 11:12)<em> <\/em>If we are boasting about how good we are, how smart we are, how good our house is, or about just about anything, without recognizing that fact, we have a false pride of life. <em> <\/em><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">&#8211;<\/span> <span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">As noted last week, verses 15 and 16 need to be read together.\u00a0\u00a0 The focus of these two verses is not so much on these things per se, but on the love of these things.\u00a0 We may have desire for fleshly gratification or possessions, or worldly arrogance, but what is our attitude about it? While this may at first seem strange, consider what Paul said in Rom 7:15 <\/span><em><strong>I don\u2019t understand what I am doing. For I don\u2019t practice what I want to do, but instead do what I hate<\/strong>. <\/em><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">We might not be able to always control that we have improper desires, but we can control if we love them. We can choose to be like Paul, we can hate what we do, and strive to follow God, even if we fail from time to time. <em> <\/em><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\"> <\/span><\/div>\n<div><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">17 \u2013 And the world and its desires are fading away, but the person who does God\u2019s will remains forever. <\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">&#8211;<\/span> <span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">John now gives another reason why we should not love the things of the world. This world is temporary, while God is forever. If we are going to love something, we should love that which will last. <em> <\/em><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\"> <\/span><span style=\"color: #4f81bd;\"><em><span style=\"font-family: Cambria; font-size: small;\">e.<\/span><\/em> <em><span style=\"font-family: Cambria;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Their Position (2:18-27) <\/span><\/span><\/em><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\"> <\/span><span style=\"color: #243f60;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria; font-size: small;\">i.<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: Cambria;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Antichrists a sign of the time\u00a0 (2:18)<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\"> <\/span><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">18 \u2013 Little children, it is the last hour. Just as you heard that an antichrist is coming, so now many antichrists have appeared. This is how we know it is the last hour.<\/span> <\/strong><\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><em><strong>Little children<\/strong>,<\/em><em><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"> <\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">here this phrase marks a change of thought<em>. <\/em>Having made our position clear, John now turns to the position of his opponents. <em> <\/em><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong><em>it is the last hour<\/em><\/strong><em> <\/em><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">&#8211;<\/span> <span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">This is the only place this phrase occurs in the NT and this raises the question of what does John mean by <\/span><em>it is the last hour<\/em><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"> (<\/span>\u03b5\u03c3\u03c7\u03b1\u03c4\u03b7 \u03c9\u03c1\u03b1 \u03b5\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03bd<span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">)<em> <\/em><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><em>Option A:<\/em> This is the final period of History, i.e., from the ascension to the second coming. John 4:23a <\/span><em><strong>Yet the time is coming, and is now here, when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth<\/strong>.<\/em><em> <\/em><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"> This phrase is thus similar to the phase \u201cthe last days\u201d<em> <\/em>such as in Heb 1:2a<em> <\/em><\/span><strong><em>has in these last days spoken to us by a Son<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><em>Option B:<\/em> This is the final part (hour) of the last days, i.e., John is saying that they are very near the tribulation.<em> <\/em>According to Marshall this is the position held by most commentators.\u00a0 <em> <\/em>It is hard, but not impossible, to reconcile this view with the fact that it is now 2011, and this \u201chour\u201d has lasted over 2000 years.<em> <\/em>John\u2019s view can be seen as expressing the idea that Christ could come at any time. Or it is possible that John had a different view of time, a view of time that any time after the ascension is the final hour. <em> <\/em><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><em>Option C:<\/em> The phrase is referring to a quality of the current age as opposed to a time period.
